Ed Tech and Foreign Language Classes

12/5/2012

Off an on I have been conversing with one of the newer teachers in my school. He teaches a foreign language. I taught social studies. I don't know much about foreign languages but I have to figure out a way of  integrating technology in the curriculum across all content areas. This foreign language teacher jumped on board last year using technology as much as he could. He was regularly disappointed because students often found technological short cuts for completing assignments in his classes. He has become technologically 'gun shy' to say the least.
I have been working to incorporate Google products into our student's and teacher's lives. He is frustrated by Google Translate. Hmmm. How are we going to work together?
Here is an idea...Let's have upper level students create audio and video vocabulary lessons. By upper level students I'm referring to at least second year language students. Anyway, the students will...
  1. Create an audio only podcast. (GarageBand would work.)
  2. Create an audio and video/picture podcast. (Keynote would work and can be exported using QuickTime.)
  3. Create an audio, video/picture podcast and add the correct spelling for the vocabulary words. (Again, with Keynote and exported using QuickTime.)
This same project could be used with stories, nursery rhymes, songs, etc...

The introductory students will...
  1. Listen to the audio only lesson and attempt to write out the words.
  2. Listen and watch the video with corresponding pictures. The students will attempt to write out the words again and add their translation.
  3. Listen and watch the video with correspond pictures and the correct spelling. Students write out the correct spelling and translation.
Assessment of learning...

  1. Students would turn in a hard copy of the three levels of notes.
  2. Students will then video themselves speaking the vocabulary words.
  3. Students would submit their practice video to the teacher through some sort of drop box.

Again, this same project could be used with stories, nursery rhymes, songs, etc...
