There are bound to be frustrations with the new teacher evaluation system. I would not dare to pretend I recognize all of them. I also would not ever dare to preach that I know exactly what it will take to reach the ‘Accomplished’ and ‘Exemplary’ level of the rubric. Here is what I do know. Technology integration is specifically incorporated in the rubric in Standard 3 Element D. Student ownership for learning is a component in Standards 1, 2, 3, and 5. And, because of the enormity of the rubric, the shear number of requirements, and language that leaves room for interpretation, it would be wise for teachers to document their practices.
As I have previously stated, I have created a way for students to document their progress toward understanding the Colorado standards and meeting their objectives. The students do the work for the teachers! Sure, there are other methods, but if you would like me to create one of these forms specifically for you, let me know.
With regard to technology integration and student ownership of learning I know there is not a one size fits all approach. I do understand that a lot of the students simply won’t watch a podcasted lecture or search for educational material on Youtube. But, what if a handful of your students will. Are they using technology and showing ownership for learning?
There is a lot of content available through Youtube, Teachertube, Khan Academy, and more. There are also readily available applications that make it fairly simple to create podcasts out of lectures. If some of your lectures are podcasted, allowing for the occasional ‘flip’ of your classroom, and if some of your content is matched to information on Youtube, Teachertube, Khan Academy, it might be easier to reach the Accomplished and Exemplary levels of the SB 191 teacher evaluation rubric.
I’ll be around to help.
