One of my goals entering the 2011-12 school year, last year, was to improve the way I handled assignments for students that missed class. It seemed that I was always getting requests from the office or from parents for make-up work. To be honest, I wasn’t as organized as I should have been. I also felt like I just didn’t have time to either create assignments prior to kids vacationing or to go over the lessons that had already been missed.
I decided I would record my informational lectures, post my objectives and assignments daily, and attach the necessary worksheets to my website. This took quite a bit of trial and error. But, I really liked being able to tell parents that they could always find out what the students were doing in class. Mostly, I enjoyed being able to answer the “What did I miss?” question by telling the student to look it up, download what they needed, and then come to me with questions.
As you know, we all have the ability to create class pages through School Fusion. At the outlying middle schools and elementary schools network speed, and some program inefficiencies, hampered my ability to use School Fusion effectively. Anyway, I created a site that worked for me. I believe in that...Do what works for you. Blogger and Youtube work for me.
At the high school we have a number of teachers Weebly and Google Sites. And, we have a couple teachers using a combination of sites. We have teachers posting their objectives and assignments through a blog. We have teachers using an embedded google calendar to track lesson plans. We have a lot of creativity and individuality on display! Again, do what works for you.
So, what’s next? I have found a couple of fairly easy ways to turn presentations and notes into videos. Yes, I am talking about podcasting...and a little bit more...
